Fed: Government may move on housing before March: Howard
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says the federal government may introduce measures to easepressure on the housing market ahead of a Productivity Commission review into the issue.
But he says there are limits to what governments can do to control the cost of housing.
Mr HOWARD says it's important to have the inquiry into housing affordability, but hedoesn't rule out other measures being taken before the commission reports back next March.
He's told the Nine Network housing affordability is mainly a concern for first home buyers.
He says stamp duty and local government fees could be reduced and more land could bereleased to help ease prices, but it's the market that determines housing prices.
Mr HOWARD says he doesn't think a plan by Labor to introduce nest egg savings accountswould make housing more affordable.
