Orioles fire Mazzilli, cut Palmeiro ceremony: 2nd-year manager axed after team loses 16 of 18

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- A miserable week for Lee Mazzilli began withRafael Palmeiro's suspension and ended with the manager's dismissalThursday.

The Baltimore Orioles, in a massive slide, fired Mazzilli justthree days after Palmeiro became the biggest major-league star to becaught using steroids. Sam Perlozzo was appointed interim manager forthe rest of the season and managed Thursday's 4-1 win over theAngels.

Meanwhile, the Orioles canceled a pregame ceremony scheduled forAug. 14 at Camden Yards to commemorate Palmeiro's 3,000th hit at theslugger's request, the team said Thursday.
