Fed: Unfair dismissal laws adding to unemployment - report

A report has criticised Australia's strict unfair dismissal laws as stifling job creationand compounding the unemployment rate.

The report also says the laws are a potential deterrent to employers in both firingand hiring staff.

It's been done by the Centre for Independent Studies.

The author KAYOKO TSUMORI says the over-regulation of the labour market is partly responsiblefor unemployment.

Dr TSUMORI says unfair dismissal claims impose prohibitive costs on employers, evenwhen an employee proves unsatisfactory.

He says the cost of dismissals make employers reluctant to take on additional staff.
